Synthetic rubber is a man-made polymer made by polymerizing various petroleum-based precursors known as monomers. The most common synthetic rubber material is styrene-butadiene, synthesized from the copolymerization of styrene and 1,3-butadiene. Several other synthetic rubber polymers are produced by polymerization of monomers such as isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene), chloroprene (2-chloro-1,3-butadiene), and isobutylene (methylpropene) by adding small amounts of isoprene for cross-linking.
