What is aluminum sheet?
Aluminum sheet is the result of basic raw form aluminum being pressed and rolled into panel shapes under high pressure. Aluminum sheet is typically manufactured to be extremely thin and light, yet sturdy enough to offer extreme versatility alongside inherent ease of installation and maintenance. It also offers many other unique and useful properties that make it very widely used today in a wide variety of industrial, agricultural, home and manufacturing/production applications. The ultra-lightweight nature of the extremely thin aluminum sheet makes it ideal for use in beverage cans, food containers and other everyday products suitable for high-volume storage, transportation and retail.
Types of aluminum sheet
There are many types of aluminum sheet available for purchase in the market today. In this section, we'll take a brief look at some of the more common aluminum sheet products you'll find for sale from a variety of suppliers and manufacturers.
- Perforated aluminum sheets
- Checked aluminum sheets
- Anodised aluminum sheets
- Composite aluminum sheets
- Brushed aluminum sheets
How is aluminum sheet made?
Aluminum is currently extracted exclusively from raw bauxite, an ore found in soil types such as heavy clay several meters below the soil surface. This ore is then refined in a solution of hot lime and caustic soda, producing alumina, a white oxide powder. When combined with electricity and carbon (to create CO2) at high temperatures, these oxides produce the molten metal we call aluminum.
This molten metal is then formed into different types of ingots or alloys, depending on the final application. Aluminum intended for tubes, rods, sheets, and corners is usually formed into bars that can be up to 20 feet long (and weigh up to 20 tons!), but are extremely malleable (ductile). This makes it easy to roll or press them under a wide range of temperatures and pressures to produce plates, sheets, foils, and other shapes of almost any useful thickness.
What is aluminum sheet used for?
- Roof
- Artistic ceiling
- Balcony
- Beverage cans, beer kegs and other food industry containers
- Cable sheath
- Cladding and fascia panels
- Cranes, frames, supports and lifting equipment
- High stress app
- Light reflector
- Shelter
- Caravan
- Floors and walls
What is the size of the aluminum sheet?
There are various sizes of aluminum sheet, plate and foil sold worldwide. In general, any aluminum panel with a thickness between about 0.2mm to 6.5mm is usually considered an aluminum sheet, while gauge products thinner than this are usually classified and sold as foil. Gauges thicker than 6.5 mm (roughly a quarter inch) are most commonly referred to as aluminum plates.
The right choice for a particular application will depend entirely on the level of flexibility/rigidity required for the sheet to perform its intended function.
